About Ramappa Temple, Mulugu
Ramappa Temple, also known as Ramalingeswara Temple, is a Hindu temple located in the town of Palampet, in Mulugu district of Telangana, India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is the finest example of Kakatiya architectural style, which flourished during the Kakatiya dynasty rule in the 12th and 13th centuries.
The temple was built in 1213 AD by Recherla Rudra, a General of the Kakatiya King Ganapati Deva, in honour of Lord Shiva's victory over demon Tripurasura. The temple's unique feature is its intricate carvings on the walls, pillars, and ceilings, depicting stories from Hindu mythology, dancing figures, and various other motifs.
Ramappa Temple was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, making it the first heritage site in Telangana and the 39th site in India to receive this global recognition.
World Heritage Day - Mulugu, Telangana
The International Day for Monuments and Sites, also known as World Heritage Day, is celebrated on April 18th every year. The day was established by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 1982 and was later approved by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1983.
The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the importance of cultural heritage sites and monuments around the world and to promote their preservation and protection. Each year, a theme is chosen to guide the celebrations, and events are organised by various organisations & groups to highlight the theme.
Government of Telangana has requested the District Administration in Mulugu to celebrate this day with grand fervour, with the Ramappa Temple as the backdrop for larger-than-life celebrations.
